Formula & Methodology

The Built-Up Roof (BUR) Calculator uses the following established formulas:

Net Material Needed = Roof Area ÷ Coverage per Unit Order Quantity = Net Needed × (1 + Waste Factor) Waste Factor: 10% simple roof, 15% moderate, 20% complex Roofing Squares = Roof Area ÷ 100

How many bundles of shingles do I need per square?

Most standard 3-tab and architectural shingles come 3 bundles per square (100 sq ft). Some heavier designer shingles require 4 bundles per square. Check the bundle coverage on the packaging.

Should I order extra materials?

Yes. Order at least 10 % extra for a simple roof to account for cut waste, starter courses, and ridge caps. For a hip roof or one with multiple valleys, add 15–20 % extra.

Can I return leftover roofing materials?
