How many bundles of shingles do I need?

Divide your total roof area in square feet by 100 to get roofing squares. Most standard 3-tab and architectural shingles come 3 bundles per square (covers 100 sq ft). Add 10–15% waste factor. For a 1,500 sq ft roof: 1,500 / 100 = 15 squares × 3 bundles = 45 bundles, plus 10% waste = 49–50 bundles.

How many shingles are in a bundle?

Standard 3-tab and architectural (dimensional) shingles: 3 bundles per square (33.3 sq ft per bundle). Some heavier premium shingles require 4 or 5 bundles per square. Check the bundle label — it always states coverage area.

What is the waste factor for shingles?

Use 10% waste for simple gable roofs with no interruptions. Use 15% for hip roofs. Use 20% or more for complex roofs with multiple dormers, valleys, and hips. Steeper pitches also increase waste slightly because shingles must be cut more precisely.

How long does a bundle of shingles last?

The shingles themselves last 20–30 years depending on type (3-tab typically 20–25 years, architectural/dimensional 25–30 years, luxury/impact-resistant 30–50 years). A bundle of shingles from the warehouse can typically be stored for a few months if kept dry and not exposed to extreme heat.

The Formula

Roof Area (sq ft) = Footprint × Pitch Multiplier
Roofing Squares = Roof Area ÷ 100
Squares with Waste = Squares × (1 + Waste Factor)
Bundles = Squares with Waste × Bundles per Square

Example (3-tab, 15% waste, 1,500 sq ft roof):
Squares = 1,500 / 100 = 15
With waste = 15 × 1.15 = 17.25 squares
