Shingle Calculator
Enter your roof area (or dimensions), choose your shingle type, and instantly see how many bundles and squares to order — waste factor included.
How to Use This Calculator
You have two options for input:
- Enter roof area directly — if you already know your total roof surface area in square feet from our Roof Area Calculator
- Enter building dimensions + pitch — the calculator computes roof area automatically
Then select your shingle type and waste factor:
- 3-tab shingles — 3 bundles per square (standard)
- Architectural/dimensional shingles — 3 bundles per square (most common today)
- Heavyweight/premium shingles — 4 bundles per square
- Luxury/thick shingles — 5 bundles per square
The waste factor accounts for cuts at eaves, rakes, hips, valleys, and around penetrations. Always confirm coverage per bundle from your specific shingle package label.
The Formula
Roofing Squares = Roof Area ÷ 100
Squares with Waste = Squares × (1 + Waste Factor)
Bundles = Squares with Waste × Bundles per Square
Example (3-tab, 15% waste, 1,500 sq ft roof):
Squares = 1,500 / 100 = 15
With waste = 15 × 1.15 = 17.25 squares
Bundles = 17.25 × 3 = 51.75 → Order 52 bundles
Example: Ordering Shingles for a Ranch House
Example: 1,800 sq ft Ranch, Architectural Shingles, Simple Gable Roof
Order 62 bundles total. At a typical price of $35–$55 per bundle for architectural shingles, budget $2,170–$3,410 for materials alone (labor not included).
