How to Use This Calculator

This calculator needs three inputs to compute your roof area:

Select your preferred unit system (imperial or metric), enter the values, and the calculator displays total roof area, number of roofing squares, and a recommended material order quantity including waste factor.

The Formula

Roof area is calculated by applying a pitch multiplier to the building's footprint area:

Footprint Area = Length × Width
Pitch Multiplier = √(1 + (Rise/Run)²)
Roof Area = Footprint Area × Pitch Multiplier

Example: Rise/Run = 6/12 = 0.5
Multiplier = √(1 + 0.25) = √1.25 = 1.118
Roofing Squares = Roof Area ÷ 100

The pitch multiplier is the same as the slope factor used by contractors. It equals the length of the actual rafter for every 12 inches of horizontal run, divided by 12.

Example Calculation

Example: Ranch House — 40 x 28 ft with 6/12 pitch

Building Length40 ft
Building Width28 ft
Roof Pitch6/12
Footprint Area40 × 28 = 1,120 sq ft
Pitch Multiplier√(1 + 0.25) = 1.118
Roof Area1,120 × 1.118 = 1,252 sq ft
Roofing Squares12.52 squares
Order with 15% waste14.4 squares

You would order 15 squares of shingles for this roof — rounding up to the nearest half-square for safety.

Frequently Asked Questions

Measure your building's footprint (length × width), then multiply by the pitch multiplier for your slope. A 6/12 pitch multiplier is 1.118, so a 40×30 ft house yields 1,200 × 1.118 = 1,342 sq ft of roof area. Always add 10–15% for waste.
One roofing square equals 100 square feet of roof surface. Contractors and suppliers quote materials in squares. Divide your total roof area in square feet by 100 to get the number of squares.
Significantly. A 12/12 pitch roof has 41% more surface area than its footprint. Even a 4/12 pitch adds about 5% more area. Never order materials based on footprint area alone.
Use 10% for simple gable roofs with no dormers. Use 15% for hip roofs or roofs with a few valleys. Use 20% or more for complex roofs with multiple hips, valleys, and dormers. Our calculator lets you select your waste factor.
This calculator works for simple gable and hip roofs with a single pitch. For complex roofs with multiple pitches, dormers, or separate sections, use our Complex Roof Calculator or calculate each section separately and add the results.
