How to Use This Calculator
You have two options for input:
- Enter roof area directly — if you already know your total roof surface area in square feet from our Roof Area Calculator
- Enter building dimensions + pitch — the calculator computes roof area automatically
Then select your shingle type and waste factor:
- 3-tab shingles — 3 bundles per square (standard)
- Architectural/dimensional shingles — 3 bundles per square (most common today)
- Heavyweight/premium shingles — 4 bundles per square
- Luxury/thick shingles — 5 bundles per square
The waste factor accounts for cuts at eaves, rakes, hips, valleys, and around penetrations. Always confirm coverage per bundle from your specific shingle package label.
The Formula
Roof Area (sq ft) = Footprint × Pitch Multiplier
Roofing Squares = Roof Area ÷ 100
Squares with Waste = Squares × (1 + Waste Factor)
Bundles = Squares with Waste × Bundles per Square
Example (3-tab, 15% waste, 1,500 sq ft roof):
Squares = 1,500 / 100 = 15
With waste = 15 × 1.15 = 17.25 squares
Bundles = 17.25 × 3 = 51.75 → Order 52 bundles
Roofing Squares = Roof Area ÷ 100
Squares with Waste = Squares × (1 + Waste Factor)
Bundles = Squares with Waste × Bundles per Square
Example (3-tab, 15% waste, 1,500 sq ft roof):
Squares = 1,500 / 100 = 15
With waste = 15 × 1.15 = 17.25 squares
Bundles = 17.25 × 3 = 51.75 → Order 52 bundles

Frequently Asked Questions
Standard 3-tab and architectural shingles: 3 bundles per square. Some premium shingles require 4 or 5 bundles per square. Check your specific product's coverage data on the bundle label or manufacturer spec sheet.
Simple gable roof: 10%. Hip roof: 15%. Complex roof with dormers and multiple valleys: 20%. Very complex with many penetrations: up to 25%. When in doubt, use the higher number — leftover shingles can be stored for future repairs.
Most building supply stores accept returns of unopened bundles within 30–90 days. Save at least 1–2 unopened bundles from your order for future repairs and color matching. Always confirm the return policy before ordering.
Standard 3-tab shingles weigh about 50–65 lbs per bundle. Architectural shingles weigh 65–80 lbs per bundle. Premium shingles can weigh 80–100+ lbs per bundle. A full 15-square order of architectural shingles weighs approximately 1,500–2,000 lbs.
Asphalt shingles require a minimum 2/12 pitch with two layers of underlayment, or 4/12 for standard installation. Below 2/12, use a membrane roofing system (TPO, EPDM, or modified bitumen) instead of shingles.
