How to Use the Tile Roof Calculator
Accurate material estimates prevent costly over-ordering or mid-project shortages. The Tile Roof Calculator factors in roof area, pitch, and waste to give you the right quantity to order.
- Calculate your total roof area first — use the Roof Area Calculator if needed.
- Enter the roof area (in square feet) into the calculator.
- Select your material type and the coverage per unit where applicable.
- Set the waste factor: 10 % for simple gable roofs, up to 20 % for complex roofs.
- The result shows the total quantity plus waste, ready for your order.
Formula & Methodology
The Tile Roof Calculator uses the following established formulas:
Net Material Needed = Roof Area ÷ Coverage per Unit
Order Quantity = Net Needed × (1 + Waste Factor)
Waste Factor: 10% simple roof, 15% moderate, 20% complex
Roofing Squares = Roof Area ÷ 100
Always round up to the next whole unit (bundle, sheet, roll) when placing your order.
Frequently Asked Questions
Most standard 3-tab and architectural shingles come 3 bundles per square (100 sq ft). Some heavier designer shingles require 4 bundles per square. Check the bundle coverage on the packaging.
Yes. Order at least 10 % extra for a simple roof to account for cut waste, starter courses, and ridge caps. For a hip roof or one with multiple valleys, add 15–20 % extra.
Many suppliers accept returns of unopened bundles within 30–90 days. Keep your receipts and do not open extra bundles until you are sure you need them. Having a few extras on hand for future repairs is often worthwhile.
